WYTHEVILLE, Va. – The Wythe County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting the seventeenth annual Cliff Dicker Memorial Scholarship Golf Classic on Friday, May 15, 2015, at the Wytheville Golf Club. Wythe County Sheriff’s Deputy Cliff Dicker was brutally murdered in a line of duty shooting on December 6, 1994.

The proceeds of the event will be used to fund the Cliff Dicker Memorial Scholarship Fund, a sheriff’s office initiative which awards a scholarship to two seniors from Fort Chiswell High School, George Wythe High School and Rural Retreat High School, each year.

Individuals or teams interested in participating in the four-person team captain’s choice tournament are encouraged to call the county’s sheriff’s office at 276-223-6005.

Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. and tee off is slated for 1 p.m. Price for participation is $260.00 per team (4-person captain’s choice) or $65.00 per individual. The entry fee covers lunch, cart & green fees, red tees and mulligans.

Organizers of the event say $5,000.00 cash prize will be awarded for a hole-in-one on the sixth hole.

This year’s golf classic will be held on Peace Officers Memorial Day, a national day of remembrance first established in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy.

The purpose of the day is to, “pay tribute to the law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and to voice our appreciation for all those who currently serve on the front lines of the battle against crime.”

Dicker is the only Wythe County deputy to ever lose his life in the line of duty.

Wythe County Sheriff Keith Dunagan said Deputy Dicker led a life of public service.

“Cliff was a husband, father, friend and co-worker. Hardly a day goes by that I don’t think of the tragic day he was murdered.”

In addition to the 14-years of service to Wythe County as a deputy, Dicker was a 20-year veteran of the United States Armed Forces.

Over $75,000 in scholarships have been awarded in an effort to keep the memory of Dicker’s sacrifice alive – sheriff’s office officials say the Cliff Dicker Memorial Golf Classic is the major fund raiser for the scholarships.
