WYTHE COUNTY DSS: ‘APRIL IS CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH’

Throughout the month of April the Wythe County Department of Social Services, in conjunction with dozens of other community organizations, clubs and government agencies will be placing a major emphasis upon child abuse awareness and prevention.

The effort is part of a national initiative launched by the United States Department of Health & Human Services aimed at promoting the social and emotional well-being of children and families.

Kristin Shumate, who serves as Wythe County’s Child Abuse Prevention Coordinator, says her agency is seeking to prevent child abuse before it happens.

“In the wake of recent tragedies throughout our region, the department will be stressing child safety and best practices for ensuring all Southwest Virginia children are given the greatest childhood possible,” said the veteran service worker.

Education efforts of the Wythe County Department of Social Services will include notifying parents through the county’s school system with child-safety / child abuse information, as well as providing parents of newborns with “safe sleep” information in order to safeguard against Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

According to Shumate, over 120 infants died in the Commonwealth last year while sleeping. She says many of these deaths could have been prevented had safe sleep practices been implemented.

Proper safe sleep practices for infants require the newborn to be placed upon its back and under no circumstances should any baby ever co-sleep with parents.

“Co-sleeping increases the risks of suffocation and strangulation for young children. Parents who roll over during their sleep could inadvertently crush or suffocate their children,” said Shumate.

To highlight safe sleep practices, the agency will be showcasing a crib inside the Wythe County Department of Health’s waiting room throughout the month. The display crib will contain a baby doll and provide onlookers with instructions pertaining to best practices for safely putting a young child to bed.

The department will also be placing pinwheels throughout the community – the pinwheel serves as the symbol for healthy starts for all children.
An additional reminder that April is Child Abuse Prevention Month will be blue ribbons, another symbol for child abuse awareness. Members of the agency will be wearing the lapel ribbons as well as distributing them to area schools and doctors’ offices throughout the month.

“In recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month, the county joins thousands of other community organizations throughout the nation in declaring child abuse to be unacceptable. We appreciate the efforts of the Wythe County Department of Social Services in tirelessly working to provide our county’s children with the best start possible,” said Tim Reeves, Chairman of the Wythe County Board of Supervisors.

Additional facts concerning sleep related deaths in Virginia:

PENNSYLVANIA PREP SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS AT AGER PARK

WYTHEVILLE, Va. – This past week ten volunteers from eastern Pennsylvania logged over 350 man-hours assisting Wythe County Parks & Recreation crews at Ager Park.

The volunteers were high school seniors from St. Joseph’s Prep School located in Philadelphia. Founded in 1851, St. Joseph’s is a boys’ prep school dedicated to “developing boys into men who work for and with others.”

In keeping with this mission, the school requires its seniors to log no fewer than 40 hours of community service – a requirement many of the students chose to fulfil in Wythe County, Virginia.

Wythe County youth sports coordinator Scotty Vaught said the eight students and two adult leaders from the school made dozens of needed repairs to the playground as well as painted all of the equipment located on the grounds of Ager Park – including areas around the ball fields.

“We were all very impressed with these young men. They got along with each other so well and gladly did whatever they were asked to do – they truly are model young men,” said Vaught.

When they weren’t working, the Pennsylvania seniors who were on spring break toured the region.

According to Gail Hall, volunteers from St. Josephs have been coming to Wythe County for seven years now, having performed community services in the towns of Rural Retreat and Wytheville.

Hall says that it is through this program that many of the mascots in the county’s public schools have been painted onto the walls of gymnasiums.

Hall’s daughter, Jayne, housed the students in Rural Retreat.

Bojangles of Wytheville provided the students with lunch on their final day of service.

Following their work Ager Park opened to the general public for the 2015 season.

County officials are asking visitors to the park to be mindful of the many volunteers who invested their spring break into restoring the park and are requesting that visitors do their part to keep the park clean and safe.

17th Annual Cliff Dicker Memorial Scholarship Golf Classic

WYTHEVILLE, Va. – The Wythe County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting the seventeenth annual Cliff Dicker Memorial Scholarship Golf Classic on Friday, May 15, 2015, at the Wytheville Golf Club. Wythe County Sheriff’s Deputy Cliff Dicker was brutally murdered in a line of duty shooting on December 6, 1994.

The proceeds of the event will be used to fund the Cliff Dicker Memorial Scholarship Fund, a sheriff’s office initiative which awards a scholarship to two seniors from Fort Chiswell High School, George Wythe High School and Rural Retreat High School, each year.

Individuals or teams interested in participating in the four-person team captain’s choice tournament are encouraged to call the county’s sheriff’s office at 276-223-6005.

Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. and tee off is slated for 1 p.m. Price for participation is $260.00 per team (4-person captain’s choice) or $65.00 per individual. The entry fee covers lunch, cart & green fees, red tees and mulligans.

Organizers of the event say $5,000.00 cash prize will be awarded for a hole-in-one on the sixth hole.

This year’s golf classic will be held on Peace Officers Memorial Day, a national day of remembrance first established in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy.

The purpose of the day is to, “pay tribute to the law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and to voice our appreciation for all those who currently serve on the front lines of the battle against crime.”

Dicker is the only Wythe County deputy to ever lose his life in the line of duty.

Wythe County Sheriff Keith Dunagan said Deputy Dicker led a life of public service.

“Cliff was a husband, father, friend and co-worker. Hardly a day goes by that I don’t think of the tragic day he was murdered.”

In addition to the 14-years of service to Wythe County as a deputy, Dicker was a 20-year veteran of the United States Armed Forces.

Over $75,000 in scholarships have been awarded in an effort to keep the memory of Dicker’s sacrifice alive – sheriff’s office officials say the Cliff Dicker Memorial Golf Classic is the major fund raiser for the scholarships.

SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY EVENT SCHEDULED FOR RURAL RETREAT

RURAL RETREAT, Va. – Over 35 venders have already registered to participate in Rural Retreat’s “Springtime Small Business Day,” which is slated to be held this Saturday in downtown Rural Retreat.

Organizers of the event say they hope to showcase the products of home-based businesses, including handcrafted wood furniture, jewelry, crafts and dozens of other items which aren’t sold in stores.

Wythe County resident John O’Quinn, a wood craftsman and creator of the event, said it is his goal to give local residents the ability to share their products with potential buyers. “We have a lot of talented people living in this area and ‘Springtime in Rural Retreat Small Business Day’ will provide these individuals the opportunity to share their products with the general public.”

Michael James, Rural Retreat’s town manager, said community leaders are happy the event is being held in Rural Retreat and that he is excited to see the many products local artisans and craftsmen plan to exhibit.

“We’re always thrilled to showcase our town and are happy to see local businesses succeeding,” said James.

Saturday’s exhibition is the second small business event held within the town limits of Rural Retreat in under a year – a similar sale was held last November and many venders reported record sales.

Dr. Gary M. Houseman, Rural Retreat’s representative on the Wythe County Board of Supervisors, stated that small businesses are the backbone of America and anything a community can do to enhance their presence is a good thing.

“It’s good to see a community making a conscientious effort to celebrate and promote local entrepreneurs,” said Houseman.

The sale, which is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. this Saturday, will be held inside the Rural Retreat Community Center located on Catron St. and is slated to last until 3 p.m.

Individuals wishing to make last-minute reservations are encouraged to contact John O’Quinn: 276-389-8972 / [email protected]. Limited vender space is available at the price of $25. According to O’Quinn, the vender fee serves to cover the costs associated with promoting the event.

Rural Retreat is a historic Virginia community which predates the establishment of Wythe County. The town’s most notable resident was Dr. Charles T. Pepper, inspiration for the name of the soft drink, “Dr. Pepper.”

Wythe County Tourism Director Jeremy T.K. Farley said he’s optimistic that the event will draw people into Wythe County.

“Last November’s small business day was a huge success and Saturday’s event seems to have even greater participation. The community is very fortunate to have so many local citizens taking initiative and actively promoting small and home-based businesses,” said Farley.

WYTHE COUNTY OFFERING TWO BOB ROSS PAINTING CLASSES THIS SPRING

WYTHEVILLE, Va. – Over the past several years the Wythe County Department of Parks & Recreation has hosted an annual Bob Ross Painting Class for local residents to enjoy.

The one-day, five-hour long session has typically been held in Max Meadows and seen capacity crowds each year.

Recognizing the popularity of the classes, which are equipped to handle the semi-professional painter as well as those with no painting experience whatsoever, county officials say they will be offering two Bob Ross Painting Classes this spring.

The first class will be held on Sunday, March 8, 2015, inside the Max Meadows Ruritan Building.

Participants in this session will be painting “Seascape,” a landscape scene along a beach which features a decaying and sand swept wooden fence leading into the ocean.

The second class of the season will be held on the western side of the county inside the Rural Retreat Community Center on Sunday, April 12.

Those who attend the painting session in Rural Retreat will work on Ross’ “Rolling Hills” painting. This image features an orange sky hovering over foggy blue mountains and a pond whose surroundings are in full bloom.
Both classes will be led by certified Bob Ross instructor Judy Moore-Gist and are scheduled to last from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m.

In addition to having hosted numerous painting classes in Wythe County, Moore-Gist was recently tasked with leading the Blue Ridge PBS 2014 Bob Ross Painting Class at the Taubman Museum of Art in Roanoke.

Cost to attend either class is $65.00 and will cover all materials. The minimum age for those wishing to attend is 15.

Parks and recreation officials are warning the general public that limited seating is available for the classes and are urging those interested to register for either class as soon as possible – admittance to the class will be on a first to register basis.

Individuals wishing to register for either or both of the classes are urged to contact the Wythe County Department of Parks & Recreation as soon as possible (276-223-4519) or email Kevin Williams at [email protected].

Wythe County Youth Day at WCC Basketball Game this Saturday

WYTHEVILLE, Va. – This weekend the Wytheville Community College Wildcats will be taking on Caldwell Community College in a game that will determine the second place finisher in the NJCAA’s Tarheel Conference.

The Wildcats will enter Saturday’s game with an overall record of 14-10, fresh off a 95-82 victory against Central Carolina in a game that was played in Wytheville last Saturday.

With no additional conference games left on the schedule, Saturday’s game will decide the regular season finishing order for the seven member basketball conference – which includes all Division III NJCAA teams from West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

In an effort to showcase the team’s successes to the local community they represent, as well as recognize youth-athletes, the Wytheville Community College Men’s Basketball program has designated Saturday’s game as “Youth Basketball Day” and will be honoring all Wythe County youth basketball teams at halftime.

As an added bonus to county residents, admission to the game is free for everyone.

“We’re excited to have the youth come out to watch us play,” said Wytheville Community College head basketball coach Tyler Cannoy.

Cannoy, who is a Wythe County native, went on to say, “this is a great opportunity for our youth athletes to see good basketball without having to leave town.”

Scotty Vaught, youth sports coordinator for Wythe County Department of Parks & Recreation agrees.

“The young men who play for Wytheville Community College represent our community very well and we appreciate the opportunity to expose our young athletes to such great role models.”

Saturday’s game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. and will be held inside the Wytheville Community Center. The community center is located behind the Wytheville Community College.

WYTHE COUNTY WRAPS UP YOUTH BASKETBALL SEASON WITH CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES

WYTHEVILLE, Va. – Wythe County’s Department of Parks & Recreation wrapped up the 2014 youth junior varsity basketball season this week with a championship double header game at the Wytheville Wellness Center.

First to take the court were the fourth and fifth grade boy’s tournament finalists, the Max Meadows Pioneers and Rural Retreat Indians (Black). The Indians put up 22 points compared to the Pioneers’ 7, in the 24-minute game, capping off their perfect season with a 9-0 record.

Led by coaches Brian Smith and Michael Spraker, the Indians competed against three other county teams over the course of the regular season, earning championship medals for their entire team.

After the boys basketball game, the communities of Max Meadows and Rural Retreat were then represented once again in the JV – girls championship game, between the Lady Pioneers and the Lady Indians.

This time, Max Meadows would be the victors, as the Lady Pioneers outscored the Lady Indians by a margin of 24-11.

Head coach Ann Morgan’s Lady Pioneers posted a perfect 10-0 season, competing in a combined 5-team league comprised of three Wythe County teams and two from the Town of Wytheville.

To celebrate what Wythe County Parks & Recreation youth sports coordinator Scotty Vaught referred to as “one of the league’s better seasons,” Radford University has dubbed Sunday, December 21, 2014, as “Wythe County Day” and will provide the county’s junior-varsity youth boys and girls basketball players, coaches and league volunteers with free entry into the 2 p.m. game versus the Cornell University.

One highlight of the game will take place at halftime, when Wythe County’s JV youth basketball teams will scrimmage against each other on the university’s hardwood court before the Big South Conference home crowd.

The varsity youth basketball season will begin in Wythe County in early January for children in grades 6th and 7th. Parents wishing to sign their children up for varsity youth basketball are encouraged to contact the president of their local booster club or Wythe County’s youth sports coordinator Scotty Vaught at 276-223-4518.

HERD AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM COMING TO SHEFFEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL THIS SPRING

WYTHEVILLE, Va. – Thanks to a new grant secured through the Wythe-Bland Foundation, the Wythe County Parks & Recreation Department will be launching a pilot afterschool program at Sheffey Elementary School this coming year.

Project leaders say they can accept up to 40 participants in the afterschool program on a first to sign up basis. The three days per week program is slated to begin immediately following the end of the school day and will lasting until 6 p.m. Lasting 12 weeks, the program will place an emphasis upon health and nutrition education through fun activities and games.

“Sheffey Elementary School was selected due to alarming health statistics among the student population,” said Kevin Williams, director of Parks & Recreation for Wythe County.

“Students just aren’t getting the level of exercise they need to be getting – not just here in Wythe County, but across the nation. We hope that this program will instill healthy habits that will go with that child for a lifetime,” added Williams.

If successful, regional leaders may look at extending the program to other schools in the county.

The afterschool program will utilize the newly renovated space of the Sheffey Elementary School’s enhanced facilities.

Supervisor Coy McRoberts, who lobbied for the building improvements said he is happy to see the facility put to good use, stating, “This program will be good for the working families of the community and I’m happy to finally see it implemented.”

According to Jeremy T.K. Farley, Wythe County’s grant coordinator, the pilot program has been a dream of several individuals in the healthcare community.

“This project is a joint endeavor, made possible by the work of several agencies and individuals,” said Farley, who went on to express his gratitude to the Wythe-Bland Foundation for offering financial assistance in launching the program.

County officials say that students will be given information regarding the project next month and that the free program will begin in February of 2015.

In the meantime, the parks and recreation department is seeking a part-time director for the afterschool program. The right candidate will be expected to manage and supervise the afterschool program, facilitate activities to achieve program goals and ensure the safety and security of students, staff, and school property during the after school program.

In addition to seeking a part-time director, county leaders are also reaching out to community volunteers, ages 16 and older, who wish to assist in facilitating the program.

Individuals interested in serving as program director or as a volunteer are encouraged to contact Kevin Williams, 276-223-4519 or [email protected].
